Eik Skaløe, born Eik Bjarne Sørensen, 1943 in Copenhagen, was Danish poet, lyricist, composer, singer and musician. He was brought up in a liberal middle-class home. After completed elementary school he turned to writing poetry, engaged in the campaign against nuclear weapons and edited the magazine Alternative. In this environment he met and fell in love with Iben Nagel Rasmussen. While Eik approached the new music and beatnik scene, Iben joined Odin Teatret as an actress and later drama teacher. In 1966 the rock group Steppeulvene was founded by Eik Skaløe and Stig Møller. Their main source of inspiration was Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, The Fugs and of course Hermann Hesse. Bass-player Søren Seirup and drummer Preben Devantier made the band complete and together they recorded the album "Hip" in 1967 on the Metronome label. Shortly after the release of the record Eik Skaløe traveled east to Afghanistan. At first Stig Møller received a few letters till Eik's contact with the outside world faded. He was found dead at Firozpur on the border of India and Pakistan in the middle of October 1968.
