Mek

Mek was born on January 18th, 1988 in Enugu City, Enugu State, Nigeria. At the age of 9, he went to a boarding school in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria. He moved to the United States in 2002 and he lived in South Orange, New Jersey where he attended Colombia High School for his tenth and eleventh grade. He then relocated to Katy, Texas and graduated from Mayde Creek High School in 2005. In 2006, he attended University of Houston for a few years, studying Pre-Nursing but he didn't fine that line of studies stimulating. He was unable to carry on with his education in U of H when he developed severe arthritis in his right hand after fracturing his index metacarpal in a fight. He has post-traumatic arthritis and he has been living with chronic pain since he was 19 years old. He's had six surgeries on his right hand and wrist but the pain persists. He deals with the pain by keeping his mind busy every second he's awake. He doesn't give himself time to writhe in pain. Mek's interest in filmmaking peaked after he watched Gaspar Noe's "Irreversible". He enjoyed the movie for its originality, rawness and the courage it took to make a film so unorthodox. After studying Gaspar Noe's work, Mek picked up a camera and started making short films for his own music. As a musician, he goes by "Irregular Mek". Mek's battle with mental health began when he was 23 years old. He was detained and taken to a mental health hospital after his first intense manic psychotic episode. In 2014, he was finally diagnosed correctly. He is Bipolar One and he only experiences manic episodes, not depression. He now has his mental health under control after spending three and a half years of his life under lock-down and psychiatric care. He is on various psychiatric meds and he takes his mental health very serious. Mek survived an almost fatal car crash in March 4th, 2019. Around 3:40 AM, a car slammed into Mek's car but he luckily survived.
