Mercedes Valdés was born in Havana, Cuba on September 24, 1922 (some sources state September 24, 1928, or October 14, 1928). She was one of the most popular Cuban singers, specializing in traditional Afro-Cuban music. Her recording career began in the 1940's and lasted until her death in 1996. In 1996 she was awarded the UNESCO Picasso Medal and Diploma of Merit. She died at age 73 in Havana, Cuba. June 13, 1996.
