She was born Janet Claire Ferroli, in Dorchester, part of Boston, Massachusetts. She went to Simmons College and eventually became an elementary school teacher in Lovelock, Nevada, where she met her future husband George A. Borgman. George was a music teacher in the same school, but after they married he studied television production in New York. It was while in New York in the late 1950s that Janet did her first radio commercial in the form of a testimonial. It wasn't until years later after raising three children, that she entered acting.
