“The problem is that censors create the concept of obscenity. In supposedly trying to protect us, they create an absurd concept of what is obscene.” She began her career in 1967 after studying acting at Yves Furet's Studio d'Entraînement de l'Acteur in Paris, along with her sister, actress Marie-Hélène Breillat. She is recognized for her work focusing on sexuality and gender issues, as well as for her work as an author of novels. In 1999, she worked with porn actor Rocco Siffredi in the film entitled Romance, considered one of the first films with real sex scenes destined for the commercial cinema circuit. This collaboration illustrates her commitment to films that challenge sexual representation and body image on screen, generating both controversy and critical acclaim. It has been nominated for awards at festivals such as Cannes, Venice, Rotterdam and Toronto, among others, and is considered an icon of avant-garde French cinema.
