Harold Brooks was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri and attended William Jewell College, Cambridge University, Columbia University, and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Chanpaign (Ph.D.). He married Katherine Elaine Huckaby in 1987 and moved to Norman, Oklahoma in 1988. They had their first child in 1992, a girl named Sarah Elizabeth, and another in 1995, a boy named Christopher Matthew. In 1991 Brooks began working at the National Severe Storms Laboratory (NSSL) in Norman where he primarily researches tornado climatology and prediction.
