After studying drama, she made her film debut with “Hangmen” (1987) and her first starring role was in “Who Shot Pat” (1989). In 1990, she participated in the television series “Executive Secretary” playing an ambitious executive. Her success came with the thriller “Speed” (1994) with actor Keanu Reeves, a film for which she won recognition and in 1996, she received her first Golden Globe nomination for her performance in the romantic comedy “While You Were Sleeping” (1995). In her quest to play roles outside the typical romantic comedy, she participated in titles such as “The Net” (1995), “Time to Kill” (1996), and “In Love and War” (1996). Towards the end of the decade, she founded her production company "Fortis Films", through which she produced and starred in films such as “Hope Floats” and “Practical Magic”. Her most recognizable box office success came with “Miss Congeniality” in 2000 and by 2009 she received major awards for her role as a determined mother in the sports drama “The Blind Side”, including the Oscar for “Best Actress” and the Golden Globe for “Best Actress in a Drama”.
