He attended the University of Houston before moving to Los Angeles in 1974 to pursue acting. Quaid's early roles included a small part in Crazy Mama (1975) and his first major film in September 30, 1955 (1978), but his breakout came in 1979 with the acclaimed film Breaking Away. He continued to gain recognition with roles in The Long Riders (1980), All Night Long (1981), and The Right Stuff (1983), where his portrayal of astronaut Gordon Cooper earned him significant praise. Throughout the 1980s, Quaid starred in various films, including The Big Easy (1987) and Suspect (1987), while also experiencing personal challenges with alcohol and drugs. After meeting Meg Ryan on the set of Innerspace (1987) and overcoming his addictions, he married her in 1991. Following a brief hiatus, Quaid returned to acting in Flesh and Bone (1993) and received praise for his role as Doc Holliday in Wyatt Earp (1994). In the late 1990s, Quaid's career had some ups and downs, with notable roles in The Parent Trap (1998), Frequency (2000), and Any Given Sunday (1999).
