“Probably, at some level, I’m not quite letting you laugh, and then getting annoyed when I don’t get the laugh” With a style that combines irony and self-criticism, Noah Baumbach is one of the most unique voices in contemporary independent cinema. Born in Brooklyn in 1969, he stands out for telling intimate and personal stories, drawn from auteur cinema and the French new wave inspiration. Influenced by directors such as François Truffaut and Whit Stillman, Baumbach uses tight shots, handheld camera and soft lighting to capture the emotional complexity of his characters. His debut came with Kicking and Screaming (1995), a witty reflection on post-college uncertainty, and since then, he has explored themes such as divorce, self-discovery and personal relationships with an almost autobiographical approach, transforming painful experiences into melancholic comedies. With films such as The Squid and the Whale (2005), Frances Ha (2012) and Marriage Story (2019), he has been nominated for Oscars and Golden Globes, and is celebrated for being a master at telling small, ordinary dramas with thoughtful depth.
