Amon has been called the greatest Grand Prix driver to have never won a World Championship race. He certainly was one of the unluckiest in that respect. The son of a New Zealand sheep farmer, Amon started racing at the age of 18 and a mere two years later (1963) he joined the Formula 1 World Championship circuit. After four years and little success, Amon got his big break when he joined Ferrari in 1967. Despite three years with the most famous team in racing, Amon failed to win a race, coming close several times. He then joined the new March Engineering team and had some more promising drives, but could not attain the top spot and he finished out his career with several lesser teams (including his own) before quietly bowing out of racing in 1976, and moving back to New Zealand.
