A former newspaper writer and cartoonist, George D. Baker joined Vitagraph in 1913 as a director, and was the main director for the films of the studio's popular comedian John Bunny--of Bunny's 43 comedies at Vitagraph, Baker made 39 of them. Bunny left Vitagraph to return to the stage, and Vitagraph put Baker to work with comedian Jay Dwiggins, hoping to strike gold with him as they did with Bunny. It didn't work. Baker subsequently left Vitagraph and went to Metro Pictures, where he became the main director for star Viola Dana. He left the industry in 1924.
