Matthias Ballmann was raised in Wiesbaden, Germany. His father, Hans-Jürgen Ballmann, one of three brothers who are all actors, owns a theatre company. Matthias studied German, Theatre Sciences and English at the Johannes-Gutenberg-University in Mainz for a few semesters before moving on to become an actor. His acting career started at a much earlier age when he got many leading roles at the theatre groups in his High School and College days. Matthias debuted on stage as Frog in Goethes Faust and continued his career with roles like Stanley Kowalski (A Streetcar named Desire) and Prior Walter (Angels in America). His first TV appearance was in 1997 when he co-starred with Steffen Wink and Franka Potente in Coming In (1997).
