Owen Dudley Edwards was born in Dublin, Republic of Ireland in July 1938. At present (January 2000) he is Reader in Commonwealth and American History at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, UK. A writer and broadcaster he was, for many years, a regular guest on BBC Radio Four's 'Round Britain Quiz'. In addition to this he is the general editor of the 'Oxford Sherlock Holmes' series, and is a recognised expert on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (the creator of Sherlock Holmes), P. G. Wodehouse, Oscar Wilde and many aspects of American and Irish history. Owen attended Belvedere College Dublin, University College Dublin, and The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. In 1966 he married Barbara Balbirnie Lee. They have three children: Sara (born in 1968 and married to Paul Parvis in 1998), Leila (born in 1968 and married to Tony Prescott in 1999) and Mickey (born in 1969). Owen lives in Edinburgh with his wife.
