Marla English was born Marlene Gaile English in San Diego, Califonia, on January 4, 1935. She was the daughter of Bertha Lenore and Arthur H. English, and Marla was the nickname given to her by friends of the family who took care of her when her mother fell ill in 1939. She began modeling at the age of 12, and became a member of San Diego's Globe Theatre while a sophomore in high school, and played roles in their productions of "Mad Woman of Chaillot" and "Cricket on the Hearth" while continuing her modeling career. Paramount Pictures signed her to a contract in the fall of 1952, and she had parts in five Paramount films.
