“Comedy is a way of coping with life. If you're not laughing, you're probably going to go crazy.” During his college years at Denison University in Granville studying history, Carell joined Burpee's Seedy Theatrical Company, an improv comedy troupe made up of students. Later, after graduating, he joined Chicago's prestigious Second City, a celebrated comedy club that has produced such luminaries as Tina Fey, Cecily Strong and Mike Myers. Acting began taking on a greater role in his life, so he committed himself to working in plays and appearing as a supporting character in television series. In 1991, he had his first film appearance in the movie The Little Rascal. Nevertheless, his real recognition came in 2005 with his iconic role as Michael Scott in the series The Office, where his comedic talent was acclaimed by both critics and the public. For his performance, he received a Golden Globe Award, the Television Critics Association Award in 2006 and was nominated six times for an Emmy Award. Since then, Carell has cemented his place as one of comedy's biggest stars, appearing in successful films and series, both commercial and independent. His versatility as an actor has led him to play roles in a variety of genres, demonstrating his ability to tackle both comedy and drama with equal mastery.
