Was a founding member of the Lafayette Escadrille flying squadron in France during WWI. In the late 1920's and early 1930's he worked in China training pilots for the Nationalist Chinese Air Force. Served two years at McNeil Island Penitentiary for taking money from the Chinese to purchase airplanes but not delivering those aircraft. At the time of his death, he owned and operated the "Sturdy Toy Company" in Sandusky, Ohio.
