A former stage actor and director in his native Denmark, Sven Gade began making films there in 1916. He traveled to Germany a few years later to direct a film version of Hamlet (Hamlet (1921)), then journeyed to Hollywood the next year. He designed sets for other directors' films and directed several of his own, but returned to Denmark in 1928. His career was unable to survive the transition to sound films, and he returned to the stage, where he remained until his retirement.
