Mert Lawwwill was born and lived in Idaho as part of a family of nine and later became an American professional motorcycle racer, race team owner, mountain bicycle designer, and prosthetic limbs designer. He moved to Los Angeles in 1961 to race motorcycles. He won his first AMA race in 1965, won the AMA Grand National Championship in 1969, and was featured in the motorcycle racing documentary "On Any Sunday" about his 1970 season attempt to retain his championship.
