Born in Belleville, New Jersey, Nutting was the only child of engineers George K. Nutting and Nancy Rowan. Nutting's father was the founder of an engineering company called Nutting Engineering in Bainbridge, Georgia, and specialized in tablet dedusters and pharmaceutical equipment. The family moved back to Bainbridge in 1978, when Nutting was 12 years old. Nutting graduated from Bainbridge High School in 1984, and became a junior student at Bainbridge Junior College. He also served in the Marine Reserve Tank Unit in Tallahassee, Florida. On the night of June 9, 1985, 12 miles south of Bainbridge, Nutting was riding in a car with someone when they ran off the road and hit two tree stumps; both passengers were ejected by the impact of the crash. While the other occupant was injured, Nutting - aged 18 - was killed instantly.
