“I'm surprised at the opportunity I got. I really am. I'll read a Better Call Saul script and think, Are they really trusting me with this? Are they seriously gonna let me have this moment that they've written for me with the wonderful filmmakers and sensitivity of this project?” Bob Odenkirk is an accomplished comedian and actor recognized for his vibrant performances and writing. He faced challenges in securing steady work but took on the role of the unscrupulous lawyer Saul Goodman in Breaking Bad without having watched the show, motivated by financial necessity. His career began to flourish after years of dedication and effort. Odenkirk started his writing journey in 1987 on Saturday Night Live, where he was part of a team that won an Emmy Award in 1989 for Outstanding Writing in a Variety or Music Program. In the 1990s, he furthered his career by appearing on The Larry Sanders Show and writing for Get a Life and Late Night with Conan O'Brien. He won another Emmy for his contributions to The Ben Stiller Show, which paved the way for him to co-create Mr. Show with David Cross. This HBO series, celebrated for its inventive and surreal sketch comedy, garnered a devoted fanbase and highlighted their distinctive comedic approach. After Mr. Show concluded, Odenkirk encountered a challenging phase marked by multiple audition rejections and unpicked television pilots. His big break arrived in 2009 with Breaking Bad, where he portrayed Saul Goodman, a witty and ethically ambiguous lawyer. His portrayal was so well-received that it led to the prequel series Better Call Saul, which explored his character's background in greater depth. The series received critical acclaim and is regarded as one of the finest dramatic television shows ever produced. In 2021, while filming the final season of Better Call Saul, Odenkirk suffered a near-fatal heart attack, during which his heart stopped for 18 minutes.
