Born in Dallas, Texas, US, American James McGee is a retired American video game designer, best known as the creator of Alice (2000). He took a course in computer science before being forced to drop out of school at 16, following his mother abandoning him. His career took off in 1993 when John Carmack offered him a job at Id Software, where McGee was quickly promoted to level designer and music manager. He was fired from Id in 1998 and went on to join Electronic Arts, where he created his best-known game, Alice. In 2002 he left the company and founded The Mauretania Import Export Company and Spicy Horse, producing a number of music videos and indie games, often founding them through Patreon and Kickstarter. In 2023, following Electronic Arts rejecting his latest project, he announced his retirement. He's married to Yeni Zhang, they live in Shanghai. They have two children, Lucky Jack McGee and Leeloo McGee.
