“When you make a film, everything is related to the point of view, to the vision.” Fernando Meirelles is a Brazilian film director and producer. Known for being one of the directors of the film City of God (2002), where he approached the life of the favela of Rio de Janeiro between the 60s and 80s, for which he was nominated for an Oscar as Best Director. He began studying architecture at the University of São Paulo, and it was at that time that he began his film career making amateur films. In 1992 Meirelles founded the production company O2 Filmes to advertise, since at that time there was no strong film industry in his country, but thanks to films like his, Brazil gained visibility on the world entertainment map. He made his film debut with O Menino Maluquinho, and years later directed an episode of Brava Gente Brasileira, which served as a rehearsal for City of God. Throughout his career he directed films such as The Constant Gardener (2005), Blindness (2008) and The Two Popes (2019), with Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce. He also directed and produced the HBO original series Joint Venture.
