A pioneering American filmmaker, Miller first pursued an acting career, but after working as a film consultant for the United Nations at the end of World War II she became interested in filmmaking. She made her first film, the documentary "Dylan Thomas: The World I Breathe" in 1968. Throughout her long career her works have been recognized and honored. She received an Emmy nomination for her documentary, "Picasso-A Painter's Diary" (1980). And she was the first woman ever to win the coveted Directors Guild of America Award for her documentary "Georgia O'Keeffe" (1977). She subsequently won three more DGA awards as best documentary director for "Picasso: A Painter's Diary" (1980), "Carl Sandburg: Echoes and Silences" (1982), and ""Eugene O'Neill: A Glory of Ghosts" (1986).
