"Only art can beat the market." Known for his ability to capture the roots and realities of Brazil, director and screenwriter Geraldo Sarno is considered one of the most important voices of the Novo Cinema movement. With films such as Viramundo (1965) and Colonel Delmiro Gouveia (1978), Sarno explored profound themes of culture, religion, and migration in Brazilian society, combining documentary and fiction to tell stories with a poetic and powerful voice. Throughout his five-decade career, Sarno remained true to his vision, avoiding commercial cinema in favor of authentic stories that reflected the racial and social tensions of his surroundings. In his later years, Sarno continued to innovate with his vibrant style in films such as Tudo Isto Me Parece um Sonho (2008), which won the Best Director award at the Brasilia Festival, and Sertânia (2020), where he mixed genres and broke the "fourth wall" to make the viewer reflect on the nature of cinema and Brazilian history with a realistic and socially responsible view.
