Aisin-Gioro Puyi was born on February 7, 1906 in Beijing, China (then known internally as "Qing" for the name of the ruling imperial dynasty or retroactively "Quiq China" by historians) to Zaifeng, Prince Chun of the First Rank and consort Youlan during the last years of his the reign of the Guangxu Emperor 1875-1908) who was his father's brother. When the Guangxu Emperor died without a royal issue (biological or legally recognized child who holds or is eligible to hold a royal title) the Empress Dowager Cixi, who had been the wife of the Xianfeng Emperor (reigned 1850-61, Puyi's great-grandfather) chose the then 2-year-old Puyi as the next Emperor.
