In 1941, his father was executed by firing squad by the invading Germans. His mother took his siblings and him to the relative safety of the Caucasus Mountains. He eventually attended the Leningrad Conservatory, where he studied violin and viola. He became conductor of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, among other ensembles.
