Sophia Turkiewicz

Since graduating from the Australian Film Television and Radio School in 1978, director/screenwriter Sophia Turkiewicz's credits include feature films, telemovies, adult and children's series drama and documentary. Her 1984 feature film 'Silver City' was released internationally, and screened at London, Berlin and Montreal Film Festivals, and Filmex (Los Angeles). In Australia, the film won three Australian Film Institute Awards, as well as Best Film at 1984 Sydney Film Critics' Circle Awards. Her 2014 feature documentary 'Once My Mother' had a national cinema release in Australia, won the Australian Directors Guild Award for Best Feature Documentary, the UN Media Peace Award for Best Television Documentary, was nominated for the Walkley Awards, and won a number of Audience Awards at national and international film festivals. Sophia is married to art historian and author, Stephen Scheding. They have one son.
