Amy Van Gilder joined The Muppet Workshop in 1976, having graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design and published the book Felt Toy Making. In the 1980s, she began a family. Her two children are journalist Sonia van Gilder Cooke and photographer Bartholomew Cooke.
