After earning a spot on the Western Hockey League's 1991-92 All-Rookie Team, Smith was drafted in the first round, 18th overall, by the New Jersey Devils in the '92 NHL Entry Draft. The next year he captained Regina and tallied 66 points (14 goals and 52 assists) in 64 games. He then earned the league's Most Outstanding Defenseman Award. His first NHL game was played on Oct. 8, 1993 at Washington and he scored his first ever NHL goal Oct. 12, 1995 against the Winnipeg Jets. In 1997, Jason was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs along with Steve Sullivan and Alyn McCauley for Doug Gilmour, Dave Ellett and a Draft pick. The Edmonton Oilers obtained Smith on March 23, 1999 for a pair of Draft Picks. He was named the Edmonton Oilers' 11th captain in September, 2001.
