Eliseo Subiela grew up in the Palermo neighborhood of Buenos Aires alongside his younger brother Héctor. His childhood was marked by emotional darkness, as his father, suffering from heart disease, avoided showing emotion, while his mother endured severe headaches, keeping the house in near-constant darkness. Subiela’s love for film took over after his military service in the Navy. Influenced by filmmakers like Leonardo Favio and Armando Bó, he directed his first short film, Un largo silencio, at the age of 17. He also worked in advertising before making his cinematic breakthrough. His 1985 film Hombre mirando al sudeste became his greatest success and is considered an Argentine classic. Subiela earned numerous awards throughout his career, and in 1994, he founded the Eliseo Subiela Professional School of Film in Buenos Aires to nurture new talent in film and audiovisual arts.
