Machlin is a graduate of the Iowa Playwrights' MFA workshop; he frequently collaborates with director Joe Luis Cedillo, who has directed several of Machlin's plays and multiple web series episodes. In 2016, he released a black-and-white music video of actress/singer Julia McIlvaine performing Peggy Lee's "Fever," available on YouTube.
