Ralph Woolsey was born on January 1, 1914. A native of Oregon he began his career making wildlife and conservation films for the state of Minnesota in the late 1930s and in World War II worked as a cameraman for the U.S. air force. After the war he worked chiefly in documentaries, in 1957 becoming a contracted photographer for Warner Brothers television shows such as 'Maverick., 'Cheyenne' and '77, Sunset Strip', gaining an Emmy for his work on 'It Takes a Thief' in 1968. In addition to his work in films and television he taught cinematography at the USC film school and San Diego University. He was president of the American Society of Cinematographers from 1983 to 1984 and in 2003 received their Presidents Award for outstanding contribution to cinematography.
