After graduating from Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia in 1986, Hayes began sharpening her filmmaking skills as an intern on the set of the TV series In the Heat of the Night (1988). In 1992 she founded Night of the Black Independents, an Atlanta-based organization which showcases films written and directed by persons of African descent. By 1998 Hayes' first feature Nandi (1998) was released.
