He was one of the great Iranian painters and one of the pioneers of Iranian modern painting. He was specially interested in a traditional school of painting called "coffee-house painting" and aimed to revive it through blending with modern ideas. He left Iran after 1979 revolution and stayed for some years in US. In 1989 he was invited to USSR and then resided in Armenia till his death.
