Growing up in Cessnock, New South Wales, this former Newcastle Knights player and Captain in 2008 was voted best player of the past 30 years in Rugby League Football. Has captained New South Wales and Australia and has won a record 3 Dally M awards as the sport best and fairest. On April 10 2007, Andrew "Joey" Johns retired from the NRL immediately due to a serious neck injury and in 2008 has become a kicking coach for many clubs including Bulldogs, Eels and Knights. He has also joined the Channel 9 Commentary team with his brother Matthew.
