Vasiliy Alekseev is a Soviet weightlifter, Honored Master of Sports of the USSR (1970), Honored Trainer of the USSR (1991), two-time Olympic champion (1972, 1976), eight-time world champion (1970-1977), eight-time European champion (1970-1975, 1977-1978), seven-time champion of the USSR (1970-1976). Vasiliy started to train in 1960. In 1961 he entered the Arkhangelsk Forestry Institute. In 1961, he was awarded the first sports category in volleyball, and also he was involved in athletics. Having switched to weightlifting, he began to train under the guidance of coach Semyon Mileyko. Graduated from the Shakhty branch of the Novocherkassk Polytechnic Institute. For some time he continued to train independently. On March 18, 1970, Vasiliy Alekseev set a record in the total - 600 kg. In July 1971, at the final competitions of the 5th Spartakiad of the Peoples of the USSR, in one evening, he made seven amendments to the table of world achievements. At the XX Olympic Games in Munich, he set a new Olympic record in total - 640 kg. After the end of the performance at the "big" arena, Alekseev continues to pass on his experience to the younger generation. In the period from 1990 to 1992, he headed the national team of the USSR, and then the CIS team in weightlifting.
