Cantor Saul Silverman was born in Russia and immersed himself in Jewish studies as a young man, and that interest continued when his family moved to Detroit. His deep baritone singing voice got him jobs on radio, in opera, and with symphony orchestras. He was known professionally as Detroit's Singing Cab Driver. After moving to Los Angeles in 1923 he continued his singing before Jewish groups as well as the General Public, including appearances at the Hollywood Bowl. He dubbed many actors in Hollywood films, including Eduard Franz in 1953's "The Jazz Singer." Silverman was with Hollywood's Temple Israel for thirty-seven years before passing away in 1976.
