James Helsing's interest in filmmaking blossomed as a pre-teen, when he drafted his friends into his home movies; 8mm camera in hand... "The Big Slope", "Earthquake Inferno" and "The Last Flight" (of the zeppelin Hindenburg - which he shot in the rafters of an old movie theatre) among his more prestigious original works! After graduating with a B.A. in Theatre Arts from San Francisco State University (where he was named Artist of the Year by the Theatre Arts faculty), he headed to England as one of twenty students selected (from the 400 that auditioned from different continents) for the graduate program at London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. He also won a spot in the intensive summer workshop at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, where his classmates were Laura Dern and the late Dana Reeve. Summer stock directing jobs also figured prominently: "Frankenstein", "Dracula", "Daisy Pulls It Off" and "Black Comedy" among his many credits. He wrote, produced and directed the short film Modus Operandi (2014), the origins of the forthcoming feature thriller Modus Operandi. In 2018 he made his feature film directing debut with Intuitions (2019) starring Eric Roberts, Linda Gray, René Mena, Vannessa Vasquez and Mike Manning, which enjoyed a healthy run on the festival circuit and picked up several trophies along the way... including three Best Director nominations for Helsing. In the autumn of 2021 he directs the independent LGBTQ dark comedy/murder mystery feature Martinez, Margaritas and Murder! (2022), which he also wrote.
