“Films can't change the society; they can simply open the space for the discussion which can lead to social change and can start new forms of social activism.” Joshua Oppenheimer is an American filmmaker educated at Harvard and Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London. Known for his hard-hitting documentaries on war crimes, his most notable work, The Act of Killing (2012), explores the 1965-66 Indonesian massacre and received multiple awards, including the BAFTA for Best Documentary and an Oscar nomination. His follow-up film, The Look of Silence (2014), complements his genocide research and was also nominated for an Oscar. Oppenheimer has won more than 70 international awards and has been recognized as a filmmaker who defined the decade. In 2021, it was announced that he will direct a feature-length musical starring Tilda Swinton, Stephen Graham, and George MacKay.
