Jessica Kavana Dornbusch was born in New York to immigrant parents from Uruguay. She has Polish and Russian ancestry, and has frequently spoken of the impact her grandparent's experiences in the Holocaust had on her childhood and her view of the world. She graduated from North Miami Beach Senior High and Boston University School of Film and Television. Her first film, "Love and Debate", originally written for Project Greenlight and based on her experiences as a high school and college award-winning debater, was made back in Kavana-Dornbusch's home of Miami, Florida. Her second feature, "Reefa", about murdered graffiti artist Israel "Reefa" Hernandez, is currently in production in Miami as well.
