Åke Karlung, born in Stockholm 1930, was a Swedish artist and film-maker. An individual eccentric that learned about filming from scratch. His parents were both teachers and supported his artistic talent as a child. Karlung developed cross-disciplinary interests in art creating. Before leaving the university of Stockholm he wrote a comparative essay on oriental mysticism and Gunnar Ekelöf's poetry. In 1959 he produced his first short film "Rast-vila" (Break-Rest) and his period as a film-maker extended to just over a decade. Karlung worked alone on his animation and films, but involved himself in associations that engaged in experimental art film and music. He was married, had children, was deeply into yoga and at one time he established a film-club at the prison of Långholmen, Stockholm. He enjoyed low-budget traveling to USA among other parts of the world. Åke Karlung never really recovered from his trip to Egypt and died exhausted of throat cancer died exhausted of throat cancer in 1990.
