Florian is a German born filmmaker who has been based in Namibia since 2009. He got his start as a First Assistant Director in 2002, and has worked in films worldwide including Europe, Africa, South America, and Antarctica. Florian wrote, produced, and directed a self-financed short film, Everything Happens for a Reason, which won the Afrinolly Short Film Competition in Nigeria in 2014, as well as the award for Best Director and Best Editor (Haiko Boldt) at the 2014 Namibian Theatre & Film Awards. In 2015, Florian directed and co-wrote his first feature film, Katutura, which has been the most successful Namibian film to date. It screened at various international film festivals and won seven awards at the 2017 Namibian Theatre & Film Awards, including Best Narrative Film and Best Director. In 2019, Florian directed and co-wrote a short film, Baxu and the Giants, which won multiple international awards including Best Foreign Narrative at the San Francisco Independent Short Film Festival, Best Director at the 2020 Dreamanila International Film Festival, and three wins at the 2019 Namibian Theatre & Film Awards. It also became the first Namibian film on Netflix. Florian has also worked in television, directing select episodes of long-running crime series for German television. He currently has two feature films and a limited African television series in development.
