Stood trial in Tonga for the murder of fellow Peace Corps volunteer Deborah Gardner in October 1976. Priven was found not guilty by reason of insanity. The court was assured that he would be placed in a mental hospital in the United States, but, after spending only two days in an asylum, he was released after a psychiatrist found no evidence of schizophrenia. The Peace Corps later gave Priven a Completion of Service.
