Martina grew up in Canada. She had been a journalist and correspondent in Northern Ireland for over 25 years, working at the Belfast Telegraph and the BBC, covering the up and downs of the NI peace process, She left her BBC job in October 2014 to enter the religious life, joining the Adoration Sisters. The Convent closed in Belfast in 2019. Martina and her colleague Elaine Kelly then worked as a tour guides for St. Patrick's Way Centre. In December 2021, the centre director confirmed the two women were leaving to join at the Poor Clare's monastery at Faughart in Co Louth.
