René Fortunato

René Fortunato is one of the most outstanding Dominican filmmakers of recent times. He has made seven documentary feature films, a fiction feature film and several short films. All of his feature films have been shown in the regular schedule of Dominican cinemas, With a remarkable success in attendance and reviews. In recognition of the quality of the documentary film he performs, he has won several awards at international film festivals, as well as other specialized events. He's been linked to the Dominican cinematographic work since the middle of the seventies. He started in the Militant Cinema group, in the Faculty of Humanities of UASD, and then he became part of the cinec group in 1975 at the Palace of Fine Arts. In 1977 he begins his professional film work, when he starts working for the company Productora Fílmica Dominicana. In 2010 he published the book "La Democracia Revolucionaria," (The Revolutionary Democracy) about the government of President Juan Bosch in 1963. In 2012 he published his second book "Escritos sobre cine" (Writings about film), about the cinematographic work in the Dominican Republic, going from the films of Francisco Palau, in the twenties, to the Film Law, approved in 2010. In November 2015 he published his third book "Una primavera para el mundo. La Revolución Constitucionalista de 1965. Álbum 50 Aniversario" ("A spring for the world. The Constitutionalist Revolution of 1965. 50th Anniversary Album "). He has received, in recognition to his work, numerous awards and distinctions, among which stand out: --- Remi Silver Award to the Creative Excellence, in the 42nd International Film Festival of Houston, Texas; in April 2009, for his Documentary film "Bosch: Presidente en la frontera imperial" ("Bosch: President at the imperial frontier"). --- ACE Award for the Best Documentary Film Exhibited in New York City During 2009. Awarded by the Art writers Association of that City in December 2009, for his documentary feature film "Bosch: President at the imperial frontier." --- Two Casandra Awards-2010. For best director and best Cinematographic production, for his feature film "Bosch: President at the imperial border." --- Pitirre Award for the Best Documentary Film of the Caribbean Region, in the II International Film Festival of San Juan, Puerto Rico, for his documentary "April, The Trench of Honor" in October 1990. --- Lasa Film Award, granted by the Latin American Studies Association -LASA- in September 1995; for his documentary film " The Chief's power II", considered as one of the best documentary films made in Latin America. --- Special Recognition at the International Book Fair Santo Domingo '99, for his work toward the rescue and diffusion of the historical memory of the Dominican nation. --- Honorific Mention at the First Ibero-American Independent Documentary Film Festival - "All voices against silence"-, for his Documentary "April, The trench of honor" held in Mexico City in June 2000. --- Award on Professional Excellence, awarded by the Government of the Dominican Republic in July 2000, for his contributions to the development of the Dominican culture. --- In December 1991 he participated as a judge in the XXXIII International Documentary and Short Film Festival of Bilbao, Spain. ---- In December 1992 he acted as a judge at the IV International and Caribbean Film Festival - San Juan Cinemafest - held in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Fortunato carried out studies of Social Communication in the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo -UASD- (1982/1985). Parallel to his studies he worked on various aspects of film production and television in different companies and television channels in Santo Domingo. From 1978 to 1987 he published numerous articles on film and TV in the main Dominican newspapers and cultural supplements. In 1987 he participated in one of the first workshops on "Dramaturgy and Screenplay", given at the International Film and Television School in San Antonio de Los Baños, Cuba. During 1987 he wrote the film review for "Ultima Hora" newspaper. He made his debut as a director in July 1985, when he presented the documentary film "After the footsteps of Palau", about the life and work of Francisco Arturo Palau, the first Dominican filmmaker. In August 1987, he premiered the documentary film "Frank Almánzar: Images of an Artist", and later, in 1990, he produced the short musical "Caribe" - Audience Award at the XVII Visual Arts Biennial. "Patricia: The Return of the Dream" is his feature film number eight and the first one he directs in the field of fiction. Spanish version: René Fortunato es uno de los más relevantes realizadores cinematográficos dominicanos de los últimos tiempos. Ha realizado siete largometrajes documentales, un largometraje de ficcion y varios cortometrajes. Todos sus largometrajes han sido exhibidos en las tandas regulares de las salas de cine dominicanas, con un notable éxito de público y crítica. En reconocimiento a la calidad del cine documental que realiza, ha obtenido varios premios en festivales internacionales de cine, así como en otros eventos especializados. Desde mediado de los años setenta está vinculado al quehacer cinematográfico dominicano. Se inicio en el grupo Cine Militante, en la Facultad de Humanidades de la UASD, luego paso a formar parte, en 1975, del grupo CINEC, en el Palacio de Bellas Artes. En 1977 comienza a trabajar profesionalmente en el cine, cuando ingresa a laborar en la empresa Productora Fílmica Dominicana. En el 2010 publicó el libro "La Democracia Revolucionaria", sobre la gestión de gobierno del Presidente Juan Bosch en 1963. En el 2012 publicó su segundo libro "Escritos sobre cine", sobre el quehacer cinematográfico en la República Dominicana, desde las películas de Francisco Palau, en los años veinte, hasta la Ley de Cine aprobada en el 2010. En noviembre de 2015 publicó su tercer libro "Una primavera para el mundo. La Revolución Constitucionalista de 1965. Álbum 50 Aniversario". Ha recibido, en reconocimiento a su trabajo, numerosos premios y distinciones, entre los cuales se destacan: ---Premio Remi de Plata a la excelencia creativa, en el 42 Festival Internacional de Cine de Houston, Texas. En abril de 2009, por su documental "Bosch: Presidente en la frontera imperial." ---Premio ACE al Mejor Documental exhibido en la ciudad de Nueva York durante el 2009. Otorgado por la Asociación de Cronistas de Arte de esa ciudad en diciembre de 2009, por su largometraje documental "Bosch: Presidente en la frontera imperial." ---Dos Premios Casandra, 2010, al mejor director y a la mejor producción cinematográfica, por su largometraje "Bosch: Presidente en la frontera imperial." ---Premio Pitirre al Mejor Documental de la región del Caribe, en el II Festival Internacional de Cine de San Juan, Puerto Rico, por su documental "ABRIL, La trinchera del honor", en octubre de 1990. --- Lasa Film Awards, otorgado por la Asociación de Estudios Latinoamericanos de los Estados Unidos-LASA-, en septiembre de 1995, por su documental "El Poder del Jefe II", considerándolo como uno de los mejores documentales realizados en América Latina. ---Reconocimiento Especial Feria Internacional del Libro Sto. Dgo. '99, por su labor de rescate y difusión de la memoria histórica de la nación dominicana. ---Mención Honorífica en el Primer Festival Iberoamericano de Cine Documental Independiente -"Contra el silencio todas las voces"-, por su documental "La trinchera del honor", celebrado en ciudad México en junio del año 2000. ---Premio a La Excelencia Profesional, otorgado por el Poder Ejecutivo de la Republica Dominicana, en julio del 2000, por sus aportes al desarrollo de la cultura dominicana. ---En Diciembre de 1991 participó como jurado en el XXXIII Festival Internacional de Cine Documental y Cortometraje de Bilbao, España. ----En Diciembre de 1992 formó parte del Jurado en el IV Festival de Cine Internacional y del Caribe -San Juan Cinemafest-, celebrado en San Juan, Puerto Rico. Fortunato realizó estudios de Comunicación Social en la Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo -UASD- (1982/1985). Paralelo a sus estudios trabajó en diversos aspectos de la producción de cine y televisión en diferentes empresas y canales de televisión de Sto. Dgo. De 1978 a 1987 publicó numerosos artículos sobre cine y TV en los principales periódicos y suplementos culturales dominicanos. En 1987 participó en uno de los primeros talleres sobre "Dramaturgia y Guión Cinematográfico", que se impartieron en la Escuela Internacional de Cine y Televisión de San Antonio de Los Baños, en Cuba. Durante 1987 escribió la crítica de cine del periódico Ultima Hora. Debutó como realizador en julio de 1985, cuando presentó el documental "Tras las huellas de Palau", sobre la vida y obra de Francisco Arturo Palau, primer cineasta dominicano. En agosto de 1987, estrenó el documental "Frank Almánzar: Imágenes de un artista", para luego realizar en 1990 el corto musical "Caribe" -Premio del Público en la XVII Bienal de Artes Visuales-. "Patricia: El Regreso del Sueño" es su largometraje numero ocho y el primero que dirige en el campo de la ficcion.
