Alex directed, wrote and shot the thriller feature documentary Last Breath (Netflix, BBC Storyville, Screen Scotland, Arte & SVT) about a North Sea diving accident in 2012. It was released theatrically in the UK through Dogwoof in April 2019 and had its international premiere at Hot Docs in Toronto that May, winning an audience award. Over his 20 year career Alex has also directed documentaries for a number of global broadcasters including the BBC, ITV, National Geographic, Animal Planet, History and Travel. The subjects have been wide ranging, from the Grierson nominated Mud, Sweat & Tractors (BBC), about the history of British agriculture, to Animal Planet's most successful series ever; River Monsters, which follows angling detective Jeremy Wade as he tracks down killer freshwater fish. Whether it's a natural history film for one of the world's largest cinema screens (Rise of the Temple King - SEGA/ORBI) or exploring the impact of the Northern Island Peace Process (What Happened Next? Edge of the Union - BBC) engaging and emotional storytelling is always at the heart of his films. Alex's latest feature documentary, Lucy the Human Chimp (Channel 4 & HBO Max) is about the unbreakable bond between a human and chimpanzee, where they lived together on an uninhabited jungle island for more than 6 years.
