Champion rower Daniel Hubert "Dan" Barrow Jr. was born on July 22, 1909 in Yeadon, Pennsylvania. Barrow first started rowing while a student at West Philadelphia Catholic High School and sat in a combined Philadelphia high school eight which won the 1927 national prep crown. Moreover, Daniel helped the eight-oared shell from the Penn Athletic Club Rowing Association win the World Championships in Belgium in 1930. After switching over to sculling in 1933, Barrow subsequently won the national titles in the doubles in both 1934 and 1935. In addition, Daniel was the 1935 quads national champion and 1936 octuple sculls national champion. In the wake of winning his sole singles championship in 1936, Barrow capped off his impressive athletic career by winning the bronze medal in the men's single sculls at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, Germany. Daniel died at age 84 on November 4, 1993 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
