Sally's talent has been described as big. She has deep emotional range, which she exhibited to standing ovations while playing "Rose" in "Fences" directed by the late Broadway director Marion McClinton. After watching her on stage Uta Hagen got up from her chair, stopped and praised her for the honesty and pain she brought to the role of "Debra" the juror in "Voire Dire". She's gotten stellar reviews when she played the grieving "Catherine" from "Proof", she's also appeared in all the Law and Orders. She has had the privilege of working with the legendary Ruby Dee, once during a tech rehearsal Sally remarked that her husband was handsome and with that deep raspy voice Ruby shot back "He's not handsome, he's a hunk" everyone on stage cracked up. Sally has fond and funny memories sitting next to James Gandolfini at a table ready for the "Sopranos" he was a huge star but so very kind, generous and funny. Sally Stewart was born in Brooklyn, New York to a Jamaican mother and father from South Carolina. Her mother was an administrative assistant and her father was a New York City police officer/detective. She lived in NYCHA (The Projects) of Brooklyn till she was 10. Her mother and father both decided they wanted their family out of the projects of Brooklyn and moved to the suburbs of Queens. In Queens she attended Springfield Gardens HS and immediately joined the performing arts dept. this is where she realized she had a love and passion for the arts and being on stage. After high school she went to Queens College, where continued her drama education, then took a leap and lots of faith, left her comfortable little home in Queens with mom and dad and move to NYC to pursue her first love, acting. She found a cute little apartment in the west village, working two waitressing jobs to pay her rent and acting classes, studying first with Shelly Winters. Shelly never called her by her given name, instead she called her "The Pretty One" . Studying with Shelly led her to study with Elaine Aiken, then the phenomenal Susan Batson for a few years, after Susan it was Bill Esper and Maggie Flannigan at the William Esper Conservatory and then the great Wynn Handmann. After putting so much attention on dramatic acting she decided she wanted to try her hand at comedy/improv and in New York City that would be The Upright Citizens Brigade... nothing was as terrifying and exhilarating as being on stage with no script, a hope and a prayer and some skill. Sally took a hiatus from her career to have two children who are now grown up, fearless adults and she is a proud mama. She is divorced from actor Chad L Coleman. If acting is her first love then cooking and sharing food and wine with the world is her second. She created a show called POP Pairings in 2017, where she and buddy Sandye Wilson and local Wine shop owner Michael Brooks from Bed Vyne wines and spirits in Brooklyn, pair wines with food she prepares in her kitchen. Pop Pairings ran on BRIC TV till pre Covid but will be up and running again in 2022. Sally is an artist, whether it be cooking or the craft of acting or storytelling. She's in love with the skill, the challenge, and the collaboration of artists coming together for one vision.
