Jamie Zawinski was born November 3, 1968 in Nome, Alaska. He dropped out of high school to pursue a career in technical support at Westinghouse Research Labs in Pittsburgh. While at Westinghouse he discovered his aptitude for computer programming and gained a measure of notoriety for his work with the Emacs text editor. In the mid 90's, he became one of the early employees of Netscape Communications Corporation, where he is credited with (among other things) creation of the now-deprecated "blink" tag in HTML. After Netscape's IPO, he purchased the DNA Lounge, a nightclub in his adopted city of San Francisco. At present (2007) he is still running the DNA Lounge, and has entered into negotiations to purchase an adjoining property in which to develop an haute cuisine restaurant. It is rumored that his partner in that venture is Woody Harrelson, who has been seen with him at the DNA.
