Born in Seattle Washington, Floyd moved to Hawaii when he was 4. His father, Floyd McCoy Sr, worked for the Hawaii Department of Agriculture, and his mother, Virginia, was a schoolteacher. He grew up in Hilo. Floyd got his BS and MS from University of Hawaii, and his PhD from Harvard University. His life's work is the eruption of Thera in Greece. He still teaches earth science at University of Hawaii, Windward Community College.
